Notes

There is no trace of this once important well, which was once famed for its power to help barren women. NMRS records that a chapel and chantry were founded by Agnes, Countess of Dunbar, in 1295 to commemorate her recovery at a nearby well, and this may be the well referred to. Several miracles were reported, leading to the creation of a shrine here.
