Notes

OS Name Book (1870) records a disused burial ground attached to a ruin called An Caibeal ['the chapel'] supposed to have been a pre-reformation chapel. See NMRS for description of the sub-rectangular burial ground and remains of oriented building. On the shore to the west OS maps show Port a'Chaibeil, 'port of the chapel'. This appears to be the chapel mentioned by John of Fordun in about 1380 (Chronica ii, x): 'Scarba, fifteen miles long, where there is a chapel of the Blessed Virgin, at which many miracles are performed' (ubi capella beatae Virginis, qua multa fiunt miracula).
