Notes

The dedication of the church is proposed on the basis of its early medieval foundation legend in which Darlugdach got a Pictish king to make a grant to God and St Brigit for the foundation of this church; also because the local fair day was on St Brigit's day, 1st February. The Aberdeen Breviary account of the foundation of Abernethy says that Brigit herself founded it, with her nine virgins. For discussion of the cult of Brigit in the 'territorium' of Abernethy, and its use to demarcate that territory, see Márkus, Balmernio, 121-6.
