Notes

The seventeenth-century church seems to stand on the site of its medieval predecessor. The Ronan dedication (and hence the name of the church) is inferred from the proximity of Pool Ronan and St Ronan's Well, and also the annual occurrence of a Feill Ronain celebrated beside the church (Anderson, Scotland in Early Christian Times, 183 n.) Note also the bell of St Rowan (recte Ronan) associated with Strowan Church. In the eighteenth century a family called Dewar held Dewarisland in this parish for the service of ringing the bell (see Márkus 2009, 140-1).
