Notes

A number of early maps note a place called Hospitalland or Spittalbank. According to OPS i, 398, this was "said to have been a leper's hospital connected with the chapel at Harlaw". The source for this info isn't clear. No NMRS for this, though perhaps the enclosure noted at NT729271 is connected? NGR is approximate, derived from the placement of Hospitalland on Stobie's 1770 map of Roxburghshire. It is also on Ainslie, 1821, but not thereafter, and has completely disappreared by time of OS 6" 1st edn (unless renamed as Grahamslaw, but a settlement of that name exists earlier alongside Hospitalland).
