Notes

The well seems to be called both St Michael's Well and Burgher's Well. Marked on OS Explorer as W at stated NGR, though not on OS 6" 1st edn Modern OS maps note the house in whose grounds the well is sited as "Wellwood". The well has for a long time been infilled and its water is piped away. Its position is marked by a recess in the outer face of a high garden wall (NMRS, 1980). A. Edgar (minister of Mauchline), Old Church Life in Scotland (Paisley, 1885), says: "One of the wells in Mauchline, that near the U.P. Church, bears the name of St. Michael's, and is so designated in a precept of Clare Constat from Hugh, Earl of Loudoun, in 1712. This document is in the hands of the Trustees of the U.P. Church."
