Notes

See St Ninian's Church, Lamington for discussion of this Well, attested first as St Innian's Well, in OSA. Lamington Parish Church seems to be known now as St Ninian's Church, so name warranted. OS 1st ed 6" has "Church on site of St Ninian's Church". In fact this is probably an extrapolation going back to OPS i, 173, related to the "Saint Innian's Well" located nearby, named as such in OSA, vi, 550. OPS goes on to suggest that this "indicat[es] probably that the church was dedicated to Saint Ninian...or perhaps to Saint Inan, a confessor in Scotland whose feast was kept on the 18th of August." By the time of NSA, this has solidified into a dedication to St Ninian, and the well is now St Ninian's Well. It is presumably this which is represented on the OS 1st ed 6" data. The dedication to Ninian must be held to be fairly doubtful, if nothing can be found going back before OPS. Forbes, whilst noting the well under Ninian, places the parish dedication under Inan. It is not impossible, however, for the OSA notice of the well to be a misprint for Ninian.
