Notes

Martin Martin (1703, 155) lists the chapels of South Uist: 'Churches here are St Columba and St Mary's at Hogh-more, the most centrical place on the island; St Jeremy's Chapels, St Peter's, St Bannan, St Michael, St Donnan'. NMRS records: 'NF 7315 2816 The site of the church and disused burial ground was rediscovered in 1989 (Fleming & Woolf 1992). The complex, located on a promontory and island within Loch Kildonan, is comparable to the political centre of Finlaggan on Islay and might have been the seat of a bishop. The shape of the church is comparable to plans of others in western and northern Scotland and may be dated to around 1100.' NMRS gives further details of the excavation and finds, both Iron Age and later medieval.
