OPS records that this church was 'a religious house founded by one of the Macloids of Harris, and dedicated to St Clement. The date of its foundation is unknown' (ii (1), 377). It was described be Dean Monro inn 1549: 'Within the south part of this said Ile lyis ane Monasterie with ane steipill, quhilk was foundit and biggit be Mccloyd of Haray callit Roadill' (Monro, Description, 86). NMRS observes that the earliest part of the building dates to the thirteenth century.
