Notes
There is some confusion about the origin of this name. NMRS says that 'Cladh Chatain' refers to a pre-historic sanding stone, 6 feet high. But 'cladh' is a burial ground, while 'clach' is a stone. One might therefore presume that the stone should be called Clach Chattain. However the NMRS also notes that 'The name Cladh Chatain is not now applied to the stone, but is believed locally to apply to the site of a church, whose position, and that of the alleged holy well, is not known. Surveyed at 1:2500. Visited by OS (N K B), 8 June 1970.' It is therefore possible that Cladh Chattain was indeed the original name, but that it applied not to the stone but to the lost burial ground.
