This well formerly lay in Edzell parish, only 21 m west of the boundary between Edzell (west) and Fettercairn (east), the boundary being formed by the Burn of Balfour (see OS 6 inch 1st edn). In 1891 the eastern section of Edzell was transferred to Fettercairn, meaning that this well was transferred to Fettercairn parish and that it no longer lay beside the boundary (Shennan 1892, 187).
