Notes
Circa 1500 the Aberdeen Calendar, 272 refers to the patron as a bishop: 'Sancti Carani episcopi cuius ecclesia de Fetheresso'. In 1510 the Aberdeen Breviary (for 23rd December) celebrates the feast of 'Sancti Carani, episcopi et confessoris, qui apud Fetteresso et Premnecht colitur (the latter of these being Premnay).' Modern OS maps from the second edition on represent the name as St Ciaran's Church, but this is not justified by any earlier reference. The church is close to the Carron Water, which forms the parish boundary. Is it possible that the apparent dedication of the church is actually derived from the river-name?
