Notes

The church stands beside the remains of a pre-historic stone circle. The seventeenth-century building incorporates material of the thirteenth century. It was abandoned in the eighteenth century when a new kirk was built for this parish. OS Digimap shows the house which was formerly the manse as 'St Aidans'. This presumably arises from a reinterpretation of St Nidan - if NMRS sources giving that name are correct. Aberdeen Calendar and Aberdeen Breviary both indicate that Nidanus is culted at Midmar, but neither gives this as the actual name of the church. Aberdeen Calendar, 270: 'In Scocia Sancti Nidani apud Midmar confessoris'.
