Notes

On a mound that may have been the motte whose fortification was predecessor of Kildrummy Castle. A modern kirk has been built beside it. It was also formerly known as 'The Chapel of the Lochs', as the plain on which it stood was often flooded. Geog. Coll. i, 30 (c.1724): 'The Church was formerly a Chappel deidcated to St Bride and since enlarged called the Chappel in the Loch, being situate upon an eminence, surrounded on all sides with a Marish, except to the N.E., al which is now Moss and Meadow Ground. At the foot of the Mount, on which the Church is built, is a Well famous for curing diseases in Cattle, called Brides Well'.
