This was the site of the parish kirk of the former parish of Fetternear. The dedication of the medieval kirk is not attested. In 1329 the bishop of Aberdeen, Alexander Kininmonth, built a episcopal residence here (NMRS, q.v. for further details, including some doubt about the antiquity of the dedication to Ninian).
