Is linear feature?

It is the road by which one enters the parish from the west. Its name is likely to be a reference to St Lawrence because of the fair mentioned 1493: (RMS ii no. 2132), in which the king grants that there should be a hostel and hospital between the burghs of Aberdeen and Elgin where travelling lieges can be received; and therefore at the request of Bishop William Elphinston he makes the ‘villam de Rane’, which belongs to the said William and his (cathedral) church of Aberdeen, a free burgh of barony; he also grants a full faculty and power of buying and selling in the said burgh; that the bishop and his successors have the power of electing bailifs and officials, and that they can have a cross and market every Monday, and an annual public fair each year on the feast of St Lawrence and through its octave.
