Notes
The site of this supposed chapel is on a promontory near the shore. The archaeological evidence for a chapel at the site is unconvincing, though there may have been a burial ground (NMRS). Is it possible that the name has been accidentally transferred to this site from St Columba Church, Petty? This latter appears in the seventeenth century as Heglish-Colmekille in Geog. Coll. ii, 557-8: 'Alt Terly (OS Alterlie, NH716493), a myl thence Bony (= Lonnie?, NH737491), a myl thence Heglish-Colmekill'. This would place Heglish-Colmekill about two miles east of Alterlie.
