Notes

According to Rekdal, 'Vikings and Saints', Peritia 17-18 (2003-4), 265, there is a 'Croit Trolla with adjacent chapel and burial ground' here. The suggestion of a chapel beside Croit Trolla is made in 1726: 'upon the brink of this water is the Chapel of Balclay' (= OS Ballachly immediately north of the supposed chapel site) (Geog. Coll. i, 164). See also notes on Dunbeath Parish for early Christian and Norse archaeology on the chapel site.
