Notes

Ben recorded this church in 1529: 'Hic est magna Ecclesia dedicata Sanctae Mariae, vulgus vocat. The Ladey of Grace de qua homines multa fabulantur' (Geog. Coll. iii, 309) (Here is the great church dedicated to St Mary, commonly called 'The Lady of Grace' of which men tell many stories). This site is shown on 'Kirk Quoy' in the parish of Harray on OS 6 inch 1st edn., in which Harray and Birsay are shown as two separate parishes. NMRS records that there is now trace of the kirk or burial ground.
