Parish notes

In origin a chapel situated within lands pertaining to Melrose by 1178 , the teinds belonged to the abbey from that date owing to their immunity from tithe on their land (Melr. Lib. no.*73). In 1315, however, when this immunity was about to be lost, the church was made parochial. Ibid. nos.407-8). See Cowan 1967, 144 s.n.. But note that it is referred to as 'the church of St Michael' (situated in the territory of Mauchline) in 1170s (Melr. Lib. no.*73) The parish of Sorn had a small detached part which was surrounded by the par. of Mauchline (MAU) viz Garfield (part). In 1891 this was transferred to MAU. (Fr. Topname Memo): See Melr. Lib. nos. 66 & 67 for detailed marches of 'terra de Makelin' in late 12th c. Note also early reference in Nennius 'im Machlind in Cuil' - in Mauchline in Kyle - and its miraculous quern - see Watson 1926, 187 & footnote.
