Parish notes
The modern parish of Keir KER immediately to the south was earlier ‘a pendicle of the Abbacy and a part of the Parish of Holywood ... but lately divided from it and erected into a Parish’ (Geog. Coll. iii, 207). A Roman road with forts etc. seems to have gone up east (i.e. opposite) side of the Nith. Note that NSA says name may come from a fort, but no trace of eponymous fort known in the parish.
