Parish notes
Note that while the New Atlas places this parish in Glenken deanery, Cowan 1967 has Glenken/Desnes. Granted by Robert I c.1320 as an endowment for the archdeaconry of Galloway, the annexation proved ineffective and the church remained independent till 1501. Then both parsonage and vicarage were erected into a prebend of the Chapel Royal at Stirling. See RMS i app. 1 no. 22). See Cowan 1967, 92 for more details and refs. In the middle ages Kells included part of the parish of Carsphairn CPH, which latter was formed out of Kells and Dalry in 1640 (Groome’s Gazetteer).
