Columba of Kingarth

Introduction

It is possible that the Columba of Kingarth found in Mart T on March 1 corresponds to a successor of Blane on Bute. The possibility that this is a local commemoration of Columb Cille cannot, however, be discounted. A link between Blane and an individual named Columba is outlined by Bower thus: Bower Scotichronicon: Vol. 6 60-1 (bk. xi, 21) Indeed the church of Dunblane has just title to the whole lordship of Appleby (Habet enim ecclesia Dumblanensis justum titulum ad totum dominium de Appilbi), Congere, Troclingham, and Malemath in England, as the gift of the under-king and lord thereof whose son St Blane (nephew by his sister of St Chattan) raised from the dead. Blane baptised him and named him Columba. Each of these was admirable in life and spectucular for his miracles. Columba is buried at Dunblane, and Blane on the isle of Bute (Columba in Dumblan’ et Blaanus in Botha insula tumulantur). This seems to be a means of explaining holdings by Dunblane of land in northern England. No record of these holdings survive. The story of Blane’s resuscitation of a dead boy in northern England is told in greater detail in the Aberdeen Breviary, but the boy is not named.
