Berchán m. Beoaíd Bairrfind of Glasnevin

Other names

Mobí Cláirenech (Rec. Met, 662.111), Mobí of Glasnevin (Rec. Mai. 266).

Introduction

A Mobí appears among the 12 apostles of Ireland (CGSH no 402), and a Mobí Cláirenach is one of the pupils of Finnian of Clonard (Heist 1965 p 83, 101). Both are usually identified with the Mobí of Glass Noínden. He appears in the Lismore Life of Colum Cille, as tutor of Colum Cille, Cainnech, Comgall and Ciarán (Stokes 1890 line 859). MT divides Mobí Clarenech from Berchan of Glass Noínden. Anderson doubts they are the same person (ES p xxxvi) but most other scholars regard them as the same. There is another Mobí Cláirenach in CGSH: Mobí Cláirenach m. Comgaill qv.

AU 545.1: Mortalitas prima que dicitur blefed in qua Mo-Bí Clarainech obiit. The Clonmacnois group of annals add to the entry in AU, ‘whose name is Berchán, a prophet and a poet’, with ‘prophet’ deriving from an emendation of prorectano in CS (Charles-Edwards 2006 p 97). The Annals of Clonmacnois adds 'who is supposed to be called in English Merlyn' (ibid).
