Nathalan

Introduction

The saint known in north-east Scotland as Nathalan is almost certainly the same as Nechtan Neir, found in Irish calendars and in the Annals of Ulster. He appears in the Aberdeen Breviary on January 8th (same date as Nechtan in the Irish calendars), but he is on January 12th in the Martyrology of Aberdeen. Two churches in Aberdeenshire (Tullich and Bethelnie) and one in Kincardineshire (Cowie) have Nathalan as patron. In the Scottish calendars, unlike the Irish, he is consistently a bishop. The name Nathalan is Brittonic. ‘His name is a compound, the first part of which is E. Celt. nectos, pure; the second may be the not uncommon launos, joyful: Necto-launos, ‘pure-rejoicing’ or possibly ‘rejoicing in purity,’ would become Neithlaun, Naithlon in British; compare Ythan.’ (Watson 1926, 330). Watson’s contention is that Nathalan was a British saint who went to Ireland where he was known as Nechtan,
