Finan or Finian of Aberdeen

Introduction

Finan of Aberdeen is the name given by Farmer to explain dedications to a Finan in the Aberdeen area (ODS, 184), at one of which, Migvie, there was a March / April fair (Watson 1926, 286; Paul 1917, 170). This suggests correspondence with the commemorations in Mart. Ab. and K. Brev. Ab. on March 18. The name of the fair (Finzean), and the way the name is rendered in the calendars (Finnian in both cases), however, suggests the saint is not Fínán but Finnian. These names have different roots, but there seems to have been some confusion, perhaps through difficulty in translation into English orthography (Clancy 2008, 372). The church at Migvie is recorded in the twelfth century as ‘ecclesia S Finnani de Miggeveth’ (St. A. Lib., 249).

Notes

This might be identified with Fínán Lobor. Conaill who appears in Irish martyrologies on 16 March. He is not a bishop, however.
