Notes

The cult of St Gilbert is recorded here in the sixteenth century, 'at his cathedral city of Dornoch' (apud Cathedralem ciuitatem suam de Dornoch) (Aberdeen Calendar, 263). NMRS records that the cathedral, now used as the parish kirk, was founded c.1233. It had a three-mile girth or sanctuary defined by Pope Pius II (1458 x 1464).
