Notes

It is described in the OS Name Book as 'a good spring well situated a little west of Cogfauld.much famed for mixing with ardent spirit by the local drinkers (4.40). The waters from the well, as shown on OS 6 inch 1st edn., fed a small burn which may once have flowed past the kirk, though modern drainage has diverted it to flow nearer to Paphle (NT097979). This may be the only clue that the medieval kirk of Cleish was dedicated to St Mary.
